About Us

Welcome to Gourmet Gaze, where we believe every meal should be a feast for the eyes and the soul.

My name is Leo Maxwell, and just a few years ago, my kitchen was the cleanest room in my apartment—because I barely used it.

For over a decade, my world was a landscape of spreadsheets, deadlines, and lukewarm coffee. As a marketing director in Chicago, I was creative on paper, but my dinner plate was usually an afterthought, filled with whatever was fastest. Cooking felt like a chore, another item on an endless to-do list.

That all changed during a much-needed cross-country road trip. I was trying to escape burnout when I stumbled into a tiny, family-run diner in New Orleans. The chef served me a shrimp creole so vibrant, so full of history and flavor, that it felt like I was truly tasting food for the first time. It wasn’t just a meal; it was a story on a plate.

That bite ignited a fire in me.

I traded my corporate life for a culinary one. My road trip turned into a pilgrimage, learning from Texas pitmasters, San Francisco bakers, and Oregon farmers. I enrolled in culinary school to understand the “why” behind the techniques, and spent every other waking moment in my own kitchen—this very kitchen you see on the site—testing, creating, and falling in love with the process.

I started Gourmet Gaze to share that love with you.

What You’ll Find Here

This site is built on a simple philosophy that honors our tagline:

Leo Maxwell, founder of Gourmet Gaze, with a focused expression as he stirs a sauce in a pot on his stove, with a rustic brick wall in the background.

A Feast for the Eyes… With my background in marketing, I know that we eat with our eyes first. A beautiful photo can be the spark that inspires you to get in the kitchen. Here, every recipe is styled and photographed to make your mouth water and show you exactly what’s possible. This is the “Gaze” in Gourmet Gaze.

…And a Feast for the Soul. But a dish has to deliver on its promise. These recipes are more than just pretty pictures. They are tested, tweaked, and perfected to be reliable, approachable, and deeply satisfying. They are the heart of American home cooking—from weeknight staples that bring comfort to special occasion dishes that create memories. This is food that nourishes your soul.
