A simple copycat recipe for Cracker Barrel fried apples made in your slow cooker. Enjoy this sweet and cinnamon-spiced apple side dish with your favorite meals.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 pounds apples (like Honeycrisp or Fuji), peeled, cored, and sliced
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup packed light brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, cut into small pieces

Instructions

  1. In your slow cooker, combine the sliced apples, granulated sugar, brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt. Toss gently to coat the apples evenly.
  2. Dot the top of the apple mixture with the small pieces of butter.
  3. Cover and cook on low for 4-6 hours, or until the apples are tender but not mushy.
  4. Stir the apples occasionally during the cooking process if possible, though this recipe is designed to be ‘dump and go’.
  5. Serve warm as a side dish or dessert.

Notes

  • For a thicker sauce, you can remove the lid for the last 30 minutes of cooking on high, or mix 1 tablespoon of cornstarch with 2 tablespoons of water and stir it into the apples during the last hour of cooking.
  • These apples can be made ahead and reheated gently on the stovetop or in the microwave.
  • This recipe is a great make-ahead side for holidays or potlucks.
