A silky pear butter with warm spices, perfect for canning and gifting.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 6 cups peeled, cored, and chopped ripe pears (about 3 pounds)
  • 1 cup apple cider
  • 1/2 cup packed brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground allspice
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cloves
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice

Instructions

  1. Combine chopped pears and apple cider in a slow cooker. Cook on low for 6-8 hours, or until pears are very soft.
  2. Mash the pears with a potato masher or blend with an immersion blender until smooth.
  3. Stir in brown sugar, granulated sugar, cinnamon, allspice, cloves, salt, and lemon juice.
  4. Cook on high for another 1-2 hours, stirring occasionally, until the pear butter has thickened.
  5. To can, ladle hot pear butter into sterilized canning jars, leaving 1/4-inch headspace. Remove air bubbles. Wipe rims and screw on lids.
  6. Process in a boiling water bath for 10 minutes (adjust for altitude if necessary). Let cool completely before storing.

Notes

  • For best results, use ripe but firm pears.
  • Adjust spices to your preference.
  • Ensure your canning jars and lids are sterilized before filling.
  • Proper headspace and processing times are crucial for safe canning.
