Make the best velvety, smooth homemade nacho cheese sauce from scratch in under 10 minutes. This quick cheese sauce recipe uses sharp cheddar to create a restaurant-style dip perfect for game day or topping nachos.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 tablespoon butter
  • 1 tablespoon all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup milk
  • 8 ounces sharp cheddar cheese, shredded
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/8 teaspoon cayenne pepper (optional, for a subtle kick)

Instructions

  1. Melt the butter in a small saucepan over medium heat.
  2. Whisk in the flour and cook for one minute, stirring constantly to create a roux.
  3. Gradually whisk in the milk until the mixture is smooth and begins to thicken slightly.
  4. Reduce the heat to low. Add the shredded cheddar cheese, salt, and cayenne pepper, if using.
  5. Stir continuously until the cheese is completely melted and the sauce is smooth and velvety. Do not let the sauce boil.
  6. Remove from heat immediately and serve warm over chips, fries, or tacos.

Notes

  • Shred your own cheese; pre-shredded cheese contains anti-caking agents that can make your sauce grainy.
  • For a Taco Bell Cheese Sauce Copycat flavor, add a small pinch of white pepper and a dash of hot sauce during the final step.
  • This recipe is naturally vegetarian.
