Ingredients
Scale
1 cup mayonnaise
1/4 cup sweet pickle relish (or finely chopped dill pickles)
1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice
1 teaspoon Dijon mustard
1 tablespoon finely chopped capers (optional)
1 tablespoon fresh dill, chopped (optional)
1/4 teaspoon black pepper
Instructions
In a medium bowl, combine the mayonnaise, pickle relish, lemon juice, and Dijon mustard.
If using, stir in the chopped capers and fresh dill.
Add the black pepper and mix all ingredients until fully combined and smooth.
Taste the sauce. Add more lemon juice for extra tang or more relish for sweetness, if desired.
Cover the bowl and chill the creamy tartar sauce in the refrigerator for at least 30 minutes before serving. This allows the flavors to meld.
Notes
For a tangier flavor, substitute 1 tablespoon of the mayonnaise with sour cream.
If you do not have relish, finely chop 2 dill pickles instead.
This sauce pairs perfectly as a seafood dipping sauce for fried fish, crab cakes, or shrimp.
